You Know You're a Doylestown Native if You Can Remember These

Growing up in Doylestown in the 1950's & 60's, it was a community surrounded by dairy farms and open spaces. The County Seat of Bucks was a place of fun and adventure for those of us who lived in town. Here are some reflections on this period. Consider yourself a native if you remember some of them:

Home milk delivery from Gardenville, Smith's or Chamberlian's Diaries.

The lunch counter at the Rexall Drug store or Woolworth's Five & Dime.

The Palace of Sweets on West State Street with 10 cent a bag popcorn machine outside.

A "Pigs Dinner" at Smith's Dairy Bar.

The waiting line at Ed's Diner on a Sunday afternoon.

Fresh apple cider from the press on Wood Street.

The Honor Roll of Veterans at Broad & Court Streets.

SEPTA was the PTC.

Delaware Valley College was Farm School.

Shive Hardware.

Clymer's Department Store.

Pearlman's Record Store.

The Bar M at Route 202 & Swamp Road.

The Daily Intelligencer was an afternoon newspaper.

Doylestown Borough School students marching to the American Legion Hall on Memorial Day with flowers for veteran's graves.

Fickes Dairy Bar for hoagies & milk shakes.

A line around the block on Saturday night for the County Theater.

Teen dances at Hustle Inn and the American Legion Hall.

Lester "Scoop" Trauch....."Man About Town" for the Daily Intelligencer.

Arctic Food & Lockers in Cross Keys.

The Ground Observer Corps spotting airplanes from the courthouse tower.

Ely's Men's Store & Ann Stanley's for preppy clothes.

The Inmates at the jail on Pine Street growing vegetables outside the walls.

Doylestown Hospital on Belmont Avenue.

Shewell Avenue closed for sledding.

Half of Doylestown seemed to run to the Fire House when the whistle blew.

Doyle Street was the edge of town & site of the town dump.

The "Lady Barber's" on East State Street.

Sno Cones at Mrs., Sharps on Pine Street. She repaired zippers too.

Real people lived in the homes on East Court Street....now "Lawyers Row".
